The UNESCO Almaty Office on 8-9 October 2012 in Almaty organizes the international conference Alma-Ata+20 to mark the twentieth anniversary of the Declaration of Alma-Ata on Promoting Independent and Pluralistic Media in Asia.
The conference is supported by the Kazakhstan National Commission for UNESCO and ISESCO, the al-Farabi Kazakhstan National University and the UN Department of Public Information in the Republic of Kazakhstan.The purpose of the conference is the dissemination of best practices of media pluralism to enable press freedom and freedom of expression in Asia. Alma-Ata+20 will bring together media and communication specialists from the Asia-Pacific region (especially Central Asia) to assess the progress of countries in developing different forms of media (public, community and private) since the adoption of the Alma-Ata Declaration in 1992.
The conference will facilitate dialogue between policy makers and media representatives about the creation of favorable legal conditions for public service broadcasting and community media.
More than 100 participants will discuss the following key themes: legislation and media pluralism; public service broadcasting; community media; pluralism in a digital era; gender and media; institutional support and networking; capacity building for journalism education and media professionals.
