Expanding a Network in Global Citizenship for Education

12 November 2016

On 9-11 November, UNESCO Almaty was pleased to attend the Global Citizenship Education Network (GCED) Meeting held at the Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU) under the auspices of UNESCO in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The meeting convened institutions and organizations to share ideas and strategies for implementing GCED and to explore areas for collaboration through an international network to promote GCED.

In relation to the increased risk of radicalization of young people, particularly in Central Asia, the role of civic and citizenship education is gaining tremendous importance.

Andrei Chevelev, Director of UNESCO Almaty

The Meeting covered a broad range of topics related to Global Citizenship Education. On the first day of the event, all thirty representatives of GCED-implementing institutions from different regions in attendance had an opportunity to hear UNESCO Almaty present its vision on capacity development and advocacy on GCED in Central Asia. In this regard, Ms. Lina Benete, Education Programme Specialist, provided an update on current UNESCO efforts in Central Asia to achieve the global education target on Education for Sustainable Development and GCED.

2017-2019 plans of UNESCO Almaty for the promotion of GCED include organizing sub-regional and national trainings for teacher training institutions, developing training materials and strengthening communication on GCED. Ms. Benete also noted that the Cluster Office in Almaty is constantly looking for new partnerships. Together with other stakeholders at the meeting, she provided recommendations to develop GCED further, both at the conceptual and implementation levels.

UNESCO Almaty will continue to effectively promote sub-regional initiatives and raise the visibility of GCED not only in Central Asia, but also in the Asia-Pacific region and at global level.
