18 April 2008

Training seminars will be held in Bishkek and Osh, in Russian and in Kyrgyz languages respectively. The seminars will improve the effectiveness of HIV preventive education at the university level.

Participants will become familiar with the manual "Preventing HIV infection" for teachers in pedagogical faculties at universities in The Kyrgyz Republic and receive training on how to use the manual for preventive education lessons.

Seminars will be practical in scope, helping teachers improve their methodological approaches and skills on preventive education.

The manual for prevention of HIV infection was issued at the end of January 2008; it was adapted by a working group under the Ministry of Education and Science of The Kyrgyz Republic. A similar manual developed in Kazakhstan in 2006 was used as resource material for the adaptation.

The manual on prevention of HIV infection for university teachers will be used for training future teachers. The manual consists of twelve modules on different topics: HIV infection as a socio-economic problem; general information on HIV - infection; psychoactive substances and prevention of their use, legal aspects of HIV prevention and drug abuse; sexuality and sexual relations: the influence of gender factors on vulnerability to HIV and sexually transmitted infections, and others.
