“Power and Rights” highlight 2008 UNESCO World Philosophy Day Celebrations

UNESCO World Philosophy Day will be celebrated this year on 20 November. This year’s theme is “Power and Rights”, a topic chosen to contribute to debates on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The international event of the Day will take place in Palermo, Italy, on 20 and 21 November 2008. Philosophers, students, journalists, academics, diplomats and other friends of philosophy will gather for lively discussion as well as cafes philosophique, exhibitions, a philosophy book fair and other activities.



At UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris, the 8th colloquium on the New Philosophical Practices will be held 19 and 20 November; 20 - 21 November a symposium entitled “The Unconscious – Rights – Knowledge” will take place. Later this year, the centenary of the birth of Françoise Dolto will be celebrated with a symposium taking place from 12 to 14 December 2008.

Numerous events will take place in UNESCO Member States around the world, involving National Commissions, UNESCO Field Offices, Universities, Research Centres, specialized NGOs and schools.
