The UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has opened a call for nominations.
The annual Prize has been established in 2014 within the framework of the Global Action Programme. The Government of Japan funds three annual awards of USD 50,000 for each recipient. The Director-General of UNESCO selects three Prize winners recommended by 5 international independent juries.Who is eligible for the award?
Individuals, institutions, organizations or other entities engaged in ESD that show their potential for transformation, integration and innovation (see the selection criteria).
What are the selection criteria?
To qualify for nomination for the 2017 UNESCO-Japan Prize on ESD, the candidates shall demonstrate that:
-their project (programme) is transformative, it supports sustainable development, and leads to individual and social change;
-their project (programme) addresses the three dimensions of sustainable development (society, economy, environment) in an integrated way;
-their project (programme) demonstrates an innovative approach to ESD.
In addition, the project (programme) should:
-have been running for at least four years;
-have a high impact ( so the invested resources could be justified);
-be applicable and extensible;
-contribute to one or more of the five Priority Action Areas of the GAP.
How to apply for the award?
The nomination form must be submitted online in either English or French.

Important dates
2 May 2017: Last date to submit Online Nominations (midnight, Paris time);
15-16 June 2017: International Jury Meeting;
September 2017: Announcement of the Prize-winners;
November 2017: Award Ceremony in Paris, France.
