On the occasion of the International Geodiversity Day UNESCO Almaty Cluster office has supported the international Forum on Geotourism, Geodiversity and Geoparks, organized by the government of Osh region and other partners in the Kyrgyz Republic.
The forum will be held on October 14-16. It will bring together national, regional and international stakeholders in geotourism, geo-heritage and geo-cooperation for promotion of geoparks and preservation of geological heritage, as well as for enhanced regional cooperation and networking.October 6 2022 is the first ever International Geodiversity Day, an annual worldwide celebration that promotes the many aspects of geodiversity. The purpose of the celebration is to increase understanding and awareness of geodiversity and geoheritage by people around the world.
Geological diversity is the natural portion of the planet that is not alive. It includes Earth's minerals, rocks, fossils, soils, sediments, landforms, topography and hydrological features such as rivers and lakes. The term ‘geodiversity’ also spans the processes that create and modify these features.
Indeed, geodiversity plays a fundamental role in human well-being, sustainability and the preservation of world heritage, issues affecting the whole planet. On this International Day, UNESCO calls on the international community to galvanize the potential of geological sciences – and view familiar landscapes through fresh eyes.
Despite the multitude of services that geodiversity provides, most people are not aware of how dependent on it we are as a society. This is why we need to promote a better understanding of the Earth’s dynamic processes, so that citizens can make informed policy choices that will foster a more sustainable society.
